Build a table for four, six or eight

Three pieces per seat is the working rule: a large plate, a small plate and a bowl. Add mugs if the table drinks coffee at it, and a serving piece per four people.

Sets are the cheap way in and singles are how you replace what chips. The planner below uses the sizes from the product pages and the prices we read at our last update.

Two sets beat one big oneTwelve patterns rather than six, for about the same money.

Measure the shelf firstThe planner below turns seats and shelf height into stack heights.

Will it fit the cupboard?

Stack heights are calculated from the stated sizes: plates 0.55–0.85 in each, bowls 1.4–2.2 in each. An estimate, not a measurement of ours.

If it does not fitTwo stacks of three always clear a shelf that one stack of six does not.
