Selamica

Selamica: printed porcelain plates, bowls and dinnerware sets

Every piece in a Selamica set carries a different pattern, so six plates come out of the box as six finds. Sizes, stack heights and prices are on every card.

Four printed lines, and the blue one is why most people arrive

Pick the look firstThe shapes repeat across all four lines, so the decision that matters is which print you want on the table.

Assorted, not repeatedA set of six is six patterns rather than one printed six times.

What nobody publishesWhich exact pattern is in your box. The assortment is fixed per set, but no page lists it piece by piece, so neither do we.

Every piece is different

Selamica sets are assorted on purpose. A six-plate set is six patterns, not one pattern printed six times, and the pattern usually runs inside and out. That is the thing owners mention most, and it is also the thing a stock photograph hides: one plate is in the shot, so the other five stay a surprise until the box is open.

The assortment is fixed for each set, so two Selamica sets of six hold the same six patterns rather than a lucky dip. If you want one look on the whole table, buy within a single line. If you want the table to move, mix two lines in the same shape and let the rims do the work.

Four shapes cover most tables

Sizes worth knowing

Six plates stack 3.3–5.1 in. Six bowls take 8.4–13.2 in, because bowls nest only partly.

Chips, and what “chip resistant” actually means

Resistant is not proof. The fired porcelain Selamica prints on is hard and it is brittle: it survives a stack, a dishwasher and a hot dish beside it, and it does not survive the rim of a steel sink at speed. Chip and scratch resistant is a claim about the glaze, and the floor is still the floor.

Three habits do most of the work. Do not stack plates wet, because the film of water lets them slide and knock. Do not rinse a plate against the tap edge. Do not move a piece straight from the fridge into a hot oven, and keep plates and bowls out of the oven altogether: only the bakeware and the ramekins are stated oven safe.

A chipped rim is worth retiring from the table. The glaze is what keeps the surface watertight, so once it is broken the piece is better off holding keys by the door than holding soup. Buy the shape you use most in a set, and a chip costs you one plate rather than the look of the table.

Resistant, not proofThe claim describes hardness. It is not a promise about a tiled floor.

Where chips happenAt the sink, in the stack and in the basket. Almost never at the table.

What the brand states about the glaze

Every Selamica glaze is stated to contain no lead and no cadmium, and the fired surface is a watertight layer that resists stains and odours. In a kitchen that means tomato sauce and turmeric wipe off a plate that was rinsed the same evening, and a bowl that held curry on Monday does not smell of it on Tuesday.

Colour lives under that layer, so it does not fade in a dishwasher the way a printed transfer on top of the glaze does. What wears a printed rim is grit: a scouring pad, or a stack ground together while it is still wet. A soft cloth keeps a pattern looking new for years.
